Just a few years down the line, we used to watch sci-fi and futuristic movies that showed how robots and artificial intelligence would take over the world. However, the movie would soon end and we were back to our basics, never realizing that all this might be lurking right behind our back. And as soon as OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT, all hell broke loose.
Initially, users were taken aback and were left impressed with the capabilities of this tool and tried out all the intriguing tweaks and tricks possible. However, they soon realized that it might be a nail in their coffin, final or not only the time will tell. Just a few months later, many AI tools took a page out of ChatGPT’s book and made their own software which was able to carry out such impressive tasks that one could have also imagined a few years before.
After all, creating an entire movie within a minute or two just by instructing the AI via text deserves all the praise. And is also quite scary at the same time. Because sooner than later, these videographers might have to bid adieu to their job or at least work at a pay beyond the industry norm. And this is not the only domain affected by artificial intelligence, there are a plethora of others that are part of the sinking ships.
Moreover, as opposed to the generic notion that only low-level jobs will be shredded off, we are witnessing the penetration of AI into some advanced jobs as well, thereby leading to a disruption of jobs across numerous industries. So let’s have a look at some of the highest-employed jobs that might be breathing their last breath.
Jobs Impacted by AI
The only place where AI is trying to maintain an equilibrium and bring equality is by negatively impacting both the high and low-skilled workforce in a single stroke. On a serious note though, here are some jobs that have a high chance of being dethroned by artificial intelligence:
- Call center operators,
- Office assistants,
- Store cashiers,
- Mail carriers,
- Bank tellers,
- Textile worker,
- Assembly line job,
- Taxi drivers,
- software engineers,
- Artists,
- Musicians,
- Videographers,
- Stock photo and video sites,
- Blogging websites.
One thing to note from the above list is that not all jobs will be impacted equally. While the likes of call center operators and office assistants have already faced the wrath, on the other hand, jobs like taxi drivers and software engineers might still have a leverage gap wherein they could further skill themselves up.
For instance, there are many countries that don’t even have decent roads, so the chances of self-driven and automated cars are just a futuristic dream for them. In those regions, the jobs of the drivers are still in the safe hands for the foreseeable future.
If we talk about software engineers though, the AI is “whistling past the graveyard” and the latter is slowly but surely learning and enhancing their coding skills. For instance, I recently made the break breaker game in Python with the entire code being provided by ChatGPT. And the scary part- the AI took only around 4-5 seconds to generate the code!
Apart from that, there are a few impressive AI software that have come up in recent months that are capable of creating an entire short movie just by giving it a few lines of instructions via text. This could prove to be a death knell for the artists, musicians, and videographers. Not to mention the fact that websites providing stock photos and websites might also be on the verge of extinction.
Moreover, Google has recently incorporated AI into its search results. Initially, it was optional and users had the option whether to use it or not. However, it will soon be enabled by default and the search results will directly be picked up by AI and shown at the top of the page. As a result of this, users will no longer scroll down the page and open a particular website. thereby resulting in a loss of traffic and ultimately revenue for various websites.
Jobs Not “Yet” Affected by AI
Enough of the gloomy scenes, let’s move to the brighter side, shall we? While AI has encapsulated numerous jobs within itself, there are still some that it might spare, or to frame it more correctly, wouldn’t be able to get done with the same efficiency that a normal human can carry out. Some of them include the likes of:
- Plumbers
- Electricians
- Daily Wage Labourers
- Carpenters
- Jobs requiring physical presence or emotions
While robots could be trained to be bricklayers or plasterers, however, it will end up taking ages to simply lay down a brick at the correct spot, something that the laborers could do in a matter of seconds.
Apart from that, jobs requiring human reason and judgment as well as emotions will be the last ones to be impacted by AI as “natural” emotions will any day prevail over “artificial” ones.
Concluding Remarks: AI has definitely taken away most jobs!
While it has been little over a year or so, but Artificial Intelligence has already taken over the world by storm, and we aren’t exaggerating it by using such classy statements. Gone are the initial days when we simply used to have interesting talks with them to generate sarcastic replies, it has now firmly set its feet in numerous domains and is having a negative impact on numerous jobs at an unprecedented and alarming rate, something that no one thought about in their wildest dream.
While there’s no stopping the growth of AI, the best we can do from our end is to upskill our knowledge as much as possible and always have some level of expertise in a different field. For instance, if you’re a software engineer with relatively great writing skills, then you might consider writing for numerous paid websites as a freelancer.
Not only will it result in an increment in your revenue, but it will also act as your backup job, something that has become the need of the hour, considering the current employment status and the penetration of AI in numerous fields.
So on that note, we round off this post. What are your views about Artificial Intelligence replacing most of the jobs at such a rapid pace? is it such a bubble that will burst sooner than later or is it here to stay and will only make it worse for us employees?
